"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent"
- Eleanor Roosevelt
How many times have you found yourself thinking how great someone is, and then following that thought with some sort of put down, aimed at yourself?
Sometimes, instead of simply admiring another person for their accomplishments, we compare ourselves and put a negative light on our own abilities.
Putting other people on a pedestal and telling ourselves that we’re incapable accomplishing anything that great is a way to really undermine our self confidence.
It is perfectly right and normal to admire other people, as long as we don't assume that they are superior; or that we ourselves can never measure up.
We all have unique strengths and weaknesses. It might seem as though certain other people are "perfect," but no one is perfect. If you find yourself thinking that they are, you can bet that you don’t have the whole story!
Even if you genuinely believe that another person is "better" than you, that is still not a matter of fact. It's simply your opinion. Others around you most likely think differently, and that means your perception can in no way be considered a universal truth.
There will always be someone who is older, more experienced or who has special training and education.
This has nothing to do with you or your abilities.
If you notice yourself having these kinds of thoughts, it is important to examine the way you speak to yourself when using your inner voice.
Some of us may have experienced a lot of negative input as children.
Maybe we had a sibling for whom things seemed to come easily.
Perhaps we are, or have been in a relationship with a partner who made us feel bad about ourselves.
Paying attention to how you treat yourself when you are alone is a valuable means of uncovering your obstacles. These obstacles can prevent you from being successful with your intentions.
Many of our negative thoughts about ourselves can be fairly easy to restructure, once you are fully aware of them!
I challenge you to spend some time listening to how you talk to yourself when you are alone.
Would you speak to a child or a friend that way?
If not, it's time to make some changes!
